Being prepared

I know what your thinking….you cant be prepared for everything Rio. That is true, its hard to stay prepared for everything but you can stay prepared for some of the worst “what if’s” in parenting. I recently experienced one of the parent’s worst nightmares & I hope by sharing my experience that another parent wont have to go threw this.

One morning, just like any other morning, I got the kids up & dressed to take my oldest to school. After dropping her off at school I always come right back home with my one year old when I don’t have errands to run. Normally when I pull into the driveway I take my keys out of the ignition, throw them in the passenger seat where my purse is along with the diaper bag & anything else I have to carry into the house. Ill get out of the car, walk around to the other side of the car, get my one year old out of the car, & then grab the stuff out of the passenger seat. Only this time the car automatically locked itself when I got out!! So my keys & one year old daughter were locked in the car!! I panicked! This is every parents worst nightmare! To have your child locked in a vehicle & not to be able to get to them. I immediately called 911 & in less than 10 minutes they had her out.

Now I know what your thinking, next time take your keys with you when you get out of the car or leave your door open or whatever. But my point is accidents happen! Maybe you lose your keys altogether or they fall off of your lap when you got out or maybe your just a tired mom like the rest of us are. As I started to share about my experience, I soon realized that so many people have gone threw this same terrifying accident at some point in their life. I want to ensure that the next person doesn’t have to go threw the same thing & also if something like this was to ever happen again…I would be prepared! To be prepared I would need a few things, so this doesn’t ever happen again. So I’m sharing the cheep little hacks I have done in case you want to be prepared also!

First I went to the local Walmart to get a replica car key made. If you have a AutoZone closest to you that’s fine also, just anywhere that will copy a key. It doesn’t have to be a fancy beeper key that locks & unlocks your car from far away. Just the standard door key copy is fine enough for this, then get a magnetic key box. Put your new replica key to your car into the magnetic key box & stick it onto your car. It doesn’t matter where as long as you feel that its safe, hidden, & securely magnetized onto your car. Believe me you could do 90mph down the highway & this thing still isn’t going to fall off. Just this 1 little step has made my mind at peace knowing that if something like this ever happens again….I’ll be prepared!

I did go the extra step with some other things as well. I went & got a first aid kit to put into the car, I also have a little “supply” box hidden outside of our house & one inside the house also. It consists of full water bottles, walkies, a few different canned food options, medicine, band aids, candles, matches, etc. I just really started to realize how unprepared I was for any & all “what if’ situations. And you can always practice “drills” with your family also if there ever was a tornado, fire, etc.

Don’t let it consume you because there’s absolutely no way you can ever be prepared for everything that “might” happen in life but having these little inexpensive things in place has really eased my mind some. To me being somewhat prepared is better than not prepared at all.

You can read more on how to make your own kit here also.

I hope this helps those who read it so that you don’t ever have to endure something like this happening to you. Accidents happen & we never know when they might come about.
